Applying Board Butter

Board butter is essential for maintaining wooden kitchen tools like cutting boards, butcher blocks, and utensils. Made from food-grade mineral oil and beeswax or carnauba wax, it hydrates the wood, preventing drying, cracking, and warping. This also creates a water-resistant barrier that protects against moisture damage. Regular use restores the natural color and grain of the wood, keeping it looking polished and new. Board butter not only enhances the beauty of wooden items but also extends their lifespan, making it a must-have for everyday users.

Signs that your cutting is ready for a fresh coat of Board Butter:
– looks dry
– soaks up water when washing after use
– showing more knife marks/chipping

If you’ve already applied a fresh coat of Mineral Oil, adding a coat of wax isn’t required but will add more protection and a beautiful satin finish.

Instructions

Teaspoon of butter

Scoop out a small amount of board butter using a clean cloth or your fingers. Use about 1 Teaspoon per side on an 11″ x 18″ board.

Rub into the wood

Rub it onto the board in circular motions, ensuring an even coating on all surfaces, including the edges and sides.

Rest on edge

Let it soak in for at least 30 minutes, longer is preferable; buff off excess.

Some Board Butters, like Howards Board Conditioner, use a larger mount of mineral oil so it can be applied more easily.

Others, such as Walrus Wood Wax, use less oil and more wax offering a thicker layer of protection after it’s applied, .
