Applying Mineral Oil is crucial for maintaining wooden cutting boards because it deeply penetrates the wood, keeping it moisturized and preventing it from drying out, cracking, or warping over time. As a food-safe and odorless oil, it forms a protective barrier that repels water and reduces the risk of stains, bacteria buildup, and damage caused by frequent washing. Regularly applying mineral oil helps preserve the wood’s natural beauty, enhances its grain, and extends the overall lifespan of the board, making it a simple yet essential step in proper cutting board care.
Signs your cutting board is in need of more Mineral Oil:
– looks dry
– soaks up water when washing after use
– showing more knife marks/chipping
Board should be clean and dry before application.
Simply wipe food grade mineral oil on the entire board with your hand or a paper towel and set on edge.
Let it soak in for at least 30 minutes, longer is preferable; wipe off excess.
Only use Food-grade Mineral oil or a Board Conditioner.
The oils that are commonly found in your kitchen (olive, vegetable, coconut, etc.) can go rancid over time and therefore should not be used on your wooden boards and utensils.
